The LANAP® Procedure in Blacklick, OH

LANAP®
(Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

What can you expect during your laser gum surgery with periodontist Fred Sakamoto?

1. To begin, Dr. Sakamoto will need to establish how deep your periodontal pockets are and determine how much attachment loss has occurred. To obtain this information, Dr. Sakamoto uses a probe to measure their depth.

2. Next, Dr. Sakamoto will use the pulsed laser light from the PerioLase® MVP-7™ to eradicate the infected tissue and destroy the bacteria beneath the gum line. Because of the laser’s ability to target only the diseased tissue and bacteria, the majority of patients experience little to no discomfort or pain during the process.

3. An ultrasonic scaler is then applied to the root surfaces of the teeth. The small ultrasonic scalers and other hand instruments are used to remove tartar and calculus deposits that form under the gum line. The periodontist uses scalers instead of lasers for this step of the process, because the laser alone will denature the calculus rather than eliminate it.

4. Dr. Sakamoto applies the laser a second time to stimulate the root, bone, and surround gum tissue. This step also instigates the clotting process; the blood forms a sticky seal around the periodontal pocket, preventing new germs from entering and providing a sanitary, secure atmosphere for the body to start the healing process. No stitches are needed because the tissue recompresses against the teeth’s root surfaces.

5. Finally, your periodontist will adjust your bite, paying particular attention to the teeth with bone loss, in order to ensure that none of your teeth experienced any substantial trauma during the procedure.

Following laser gum surgery, new bone growth and attachment will begin forming in the clean root surfaces. As you heal, your bones begin regenerating. Eliminating the bacteria enables your body to heal naturally, so the periodontal pockets begin to mend and your teeth become increasingly stable.
