Gum Grafting in Blacklick, OH

Gum Grafting in Blacklick, OH
If you have gum disease, you may already be experiencing the effects of gum recession. Gum recession is one of the most obvious manifestations of periodontal (gum) disease, and it can be very unsightly. As the gum line begins to erode down the root of the tooth, more of the tooth’s surface is exposed. Over time, gum recession can dramatically alter the aesthetics of your smile. Many people feel embarrassed by the additional amount of tooth revealed or feel that their receding gum line causes their teeth to appear too large. Fortunately, Dr. Fred Sakamoto performs gum grafting procedures at his practice in Blacklick, OH.

The gum grafting procedure raises the gum line to a more attractive level, which reduces how much tooth is exposed and improves the appearance of your smile. Besides the cosmetic benefits this procedure offers, repairing gum recession and the damage caused by gum disease is critical to your health. Since gum tissue acts as the chief line of defense against bacteria, inadequate gum tissue around the teeth can cause bacteria to flourish, inviting a host of health concerns.

Depending on your situation, Dr. Sakamoto will recommend one of three gum grafting procedures: connective-tissue grafts, free gingival grafts, or pedicle grafts. The latter treatment - pedicle grafts - can only be used in cases where the patient has sufficient gum tissue near the tooth that needs repair, because that is where tissue is grafted from.

Free gingival grafts are usually performed when patients have naturally thin gums. During a pedicle graft, the doctor extracts a small amount of tissue right from the roof of your mouth. Connective-tissue grafts are the most commonly performed of the three procedures. During a connective-tissue graft treatment, Dr. Sakamoto obtains the tissue from underneath a flap of skin in the roof of the mouth that is cut and then stitched back together after the extraction. The extracted tissue is sewn to the gum tissue around the unprotected root. As time goes on, the two will fuse together and form a higher gum line.
