Dental Implants 101 in Blacklick, OH

Basics of a Dental Implant

Regardless of whether decay or injury initiated your tooth loss, it is imperative to replace missing teeth as soon as possible. Failure to replace missing will result in continual bone loss and detrimentally affect your appearance and health. There are several treatment options to choose from, but implants are widely regarded as the best long-term replacement solution. That being said, Dr. Fred Sakamoto understands that every patient is unique and he does not apply a “one-size-fits-all” approach to dentistry. He asks patients to first schedule a full dental exam at his Blacklick, Ohio office if they are interested in the procedure. During the initial exam, Dr. Sakamoto will also take X-rays, inquire about your health history, and address your individual concerns and considerations so you can determine if dental implants are right for you.

In the meantime, however, we have provided some basic dental implant information below to start you on your journey.

What are Dental Implants?

The Parts and Procedure

Dental implants are comprised of three parts: the titanium implant, the crown, and the abutment. Together, these parts form a secure foundation for the replacement teeth.

In the first step of the process, Dr. Sakamoto surgically embeds the small titanium implant posts into the jaw bone in the areas where the teeth are missing. Next, he secures the abutment over the exposed area of the implant. Finally, Dr. Sakamoto places a dental crown over the abutment. The custom-made crown is paper-thin and tooth-colored, which helps to further enhance the aesthetic appeal of your smile.

Implant Advantages

In addition to the obvious cosmetic benefits of replacing teeth that are missing, implants offer exceptional durability. The strength of the implant is possible due to titanium’s natural compatibility with the body. This compatibility is instrumental because it enables the implant to fuse with the jaw bone over time, providing a permanent replacement capable of functioning just like your own teeth.
